What this site does
- Colour contrast. Every text and background pairing on this site was measured against the WCAG 2.1 AA thresholds rather than eyeballed. Our brand green is bright, so it is used as a background and as a graphic element, never as small text; where green text is needed, a darker cut of it is used.
- Keyboard. Every link, button, menu, gallery filter and form field can be reached and operated with a keyboard alone, and whatever has focus shows a visible ring. A skip link at the top of each page jumps straight to the content.
- Screen readers. Pages use real landmarks, one heading per level in a logical order, labelled form fields, and captions on gallery photographs. Rate tables use proper row and column headers so the figures are read out with the service they belong to.
- Images. Photographs carry descriptive alternative text. Decorative images are marked as decorative so they are skipped rather than announced.
- Reduced motion. If your device is set to reduce motion, the rotating headline, the slow zoom on the hero photograph and all entrance animations are switched off.
- Nothing is hidden behind an animation. Content is never held invisible waiting for a scroll effect. With JavaScript unavailable or blocked, every word on every page is still there and every link still works.
- Zoom and small screens. The layout is fluid down to a 320px wide phone and up to 200% browser zoom without content being cut off or forcing sideways scrolling. Wide tables scroll inside their own frame rather than pushing the page sideways.
- Text. Body text is set at a comfortable size with generous line spacing and measured line lengths, and it respects your browser's own text size settings.
- Speed. Photographs are compressed and sized so pages load quickly on a phone on mobile data, which matters as much as anything else for people on slow or metered connections.
Where we know we fall short
This site has been built to the standards above but has not yet been through a formal third-party accessibility audit. Some of our older blog articles were written in a previous content system and may contain images without descriptive alternative text. We are working through them.
